Registration Open for Sibyllam Field Study 2020
Studio Carolina Izzo is now accepting expressions of interest for the Sibyllam Field Study for 2020. Join us for a three-week tour of Italy to visit historic heritage sites and meet with professionals from across the sectors of heritage and conservation.
We will be visiting a range of sites; from popular Italian cities and Ancient Roman sites to lesser-known towns off the tourist circuit. It will be a fantastic opportunity to experience heritage practice in Italy today. The tour will also offer participants the chance to see behind-the-scenes in sites such as the buried city of Pompeii and take part in conservative efforts taking place there presently. Participants will also be hosted on a range of different workshops — ranging from cooking classes to tutorials on making scagliola.
The Sibyllam Field Study 2019 was our most successful yet. All involved learned valuable skills, expanded networks and had great fun!

Sibyllam Field Study 2019
Students and professionals from within the heritage and conservation sectors are now nearing the conclusion of the field study throughout Italy. The two weeks passed have been intensive and rewarding, with participants visiting institutions and cultural centres across the country.
Recent highlights include a busy few days in Campania. Here the group got to take a behind-the-scenes look at the archaeological and conservative work taking place at the buried city of Pompeii, and spent some time with the Capodimonte Museum and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples; learning about the methodology and practice performed in these institutions. The team’s hard work was rewarded with a day spent in Capri, visiting the Villa Axel Munthe (a site where Carolina and her team have performed conservation treatments in the past) and an afternoon spent in the renowned gardens of the Villa San Michele.
The group have now arrived in Florence where they will visit some of the famous heritage sites and museums in the area. Here they will attend some personalised workshops held at Istituto Palazzo Spinelli, Florence’s school of conservation, and tour the city. The group will make a trip to the Manetti Gold factory, where some of the gold leaf used in New Zealand is produced; as well as tour the hills surrounding Florence. Here the group will have a chance to experience the Tuscan way of life and reflect on the weeks of busy study.
